Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! We are back full-time! I am excited to begin my ninth year as your principal, and considering what we have been facing for over a year; I am thrilled to welcome all of you back!
We are looking forward to the reopening of schools this Fall. The first day of school is scheduled for August 18, 2021. As we continue to embrace the challenges of the future, we will continue to cherish and celebrate the Chaparral traditions of the past. Our exceptional staff, involved parents, and committed students always come together to make Chaparral Elementary a wonderful and unique place.
I am grateful to continue this journey with you as your Principal, and I look forward to building a solid relationship with all of you in the upcoming year. As a Community Unified in Building the Success of its Students, we are ….C.U.B.S. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.
As we begin to rebuild and recover from the global pandemic, school safety and rebuilding our school community will continue to be one of our top priorities. We are ready for our students and will have safety and wellness procedures and requirements consistently implemented. The California Department of Health and L.A. County of Health provide guidance such as personal protective equipment, hand washing and sanitizing stations, face coverings indoors, air filtration HVAC systems, and additional outdoor learning spaces. Safety at Chaparral begins with all staff, parents, and students working diligently together to follow the school rules, safety protocols, and classroom procedures designed to keep us safe. More detailed information about programs and services can be found in this link: 2021-2022 LVUSD Family Resource Guide Family Resource Guide . Dr. Stepenosky will also be hosting a webinar with his leadership team next Wednesday, August 11th, at 3:00 PM. The link to the webinar will be posted on the LVUSD.org website main page for parents to watch at their convenience.
We will also continue to enhance our Student Social & Emotional Learning Program with lessons, activities, and instruction that build the social-emotional character and development of the whole child through mindfulness, kindness, and character education with an increased understanding of how all of us, working together, is an essential tool for social justice and racial equity. In addition, this year, we have enhanced academic opportunities and social-emotional supports with full-time elementary counselors, full-time intervention teachers, Art, and Music teachers, technology hardware and infrastructure upgrades, extended library hours, and have extended the school year by three additional days of instruction. Resources are also available for students and families at the LVUSD Counseling Center.
School begins Wednesday, August 18th. Classroom assignments will be posted Tuesday evening, August 17th, after 5:00 pm in your student’s Aeries portal. On the first day of school, students may be dropped off at 7:45 am. Students should be in their classrooms at 8:00 am. On the first day of school only, parents may drop students off or walk them into the school site to find their classroom and line-up spot. We plan to have a Kindergarten only (and siblings) drive-through drop-off line in the middle level each day. Pick-up will be on the lower yard by the large lower gate near the last portable. There will not be drive-through car line pick-up available at dismissal for kindergarten. All parents will need to park and walk to the pick-up locations. Grades 2, 3, 4, & 5 have dismissal on the upper yard, and grades TK, K, & 1 have dismissal at the lower yard gate by the last portable. Everyone must wear a mask when they are in larger groups waiting for students, and as you enter our school site on the first day. More specific drop-off line and pick-up information will be sent to all families for all of our procedures next week. As mentioned in the chart below, we will also have Runnings Cubs, where students can run laps to music on our beautiful new track on Fridays at 7:30 am. The start date for Running Cubs is TBD (not the first week of school) – stay tuned for more information and updates! Please remember that at all times, safety procedures must be followed, and masks must be worn to keep everyone safe.

We make changes in the best interest of our C.U.B.S. community, and especially for our students. Please enjoy the rest of your summer vacation. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in August! Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children. GO C.U.B.S!
